Inside the frame

Cubist painting of a person with geometric facial features and a red hat in a decorative gold frame

Sometimes it’s the frame
Rather than the picture we see
The hidden soul clothed in mystery

You see  what she wants you to see
Another life
Lived anonymously

Sometimes we see the frame
Rather than the picture
The frill rather than the substance
The projection rather than the essence

Everyone’s projecting something
That is what we notice
The hair, the clothes, the thought, the speech
But what about the essence?

We see the frame they’re wearing
But not the picture inside
Unless we really know them
And the secrets that they hide

It’s easy to make a facade
We want others to see
While the spirit remains hidden
Some place far away

Some live disconnected
From the source they long to know
Without knowing what is missing
Their lives are lived solo.
